The first deals with the dichotomy between social levels within the villages quoted in Prof Fujiki`s works. The examples he gives are of villages with a large degree of military strength which thus supported their drive towards self-rule “自律化”. He thus evaluates highly those villages who were able to secure a large number of rights for themselves. However it is difficult to say whether all villagers supported this development, for it is by no means certain whether villages were unanimous in their decisions.(164)
